Excellence verses speed
Sometimes I think about how much easier it would be to just go with the flow and do what most other clothing companies do and that is to
have our products made in China, Bangladesh or Vietnam. Send the designs off to a contract sewing company and let them crank out the products for us. That surely would make my life easier. We always have suits on back-order, in fact thinking about that this morning I can't think of a time in the last 16+ years where we have ever had a period of time without having some back-ordered suits. Not being able to get customers their products right away, ship them the first business day they are ordered causes me much stress.
I have received many samples from overseas companies and have come to the conclusion that I would rather have a smaller company making excellent products, products that we retain a close connection to the quality using people we train right here in earth quake prone beautiful Southern California then sacrifice the level of quality I want in our suits by sending them overseas. I know this means living with the stress of missed dead lines (self imposed) and not always having every suit ready every moment to ship (we are working on making that come true but...) and knowledge we are always sending you out the very best quality suit. I live by the rule of excellence in design and product and I will not change that for speed.
I talk to customers every week that tell me they have suits ordered from us that are 15 years old. Many of our customers have 100+ designs
I should start a 100+ club for them. We are proud of the fact that our suits given proper attention and care will last so long and that people still love the older styles. We have people ask for old designs all the time, I tell them we have a hard enough time staying up with the current ones.

I totally agree with your philosophy, keep the work done here in the U.S., I'll wait for my order if I have to. I think your ideas on quality and ownership of the product are very commendable, and customer service is just as important as the product itself. You do a great job!

Hey M/D,
thanks for the great entry to your blog.
I agree that we should start a 100+ club for any of the Koala guys out there....
But, somehow I don't think that there would be a lot of us guys here? Maybe there might be many of us???
I think that there should be some of us guys that have some of the older suits, take pictures of them ( the suits that is, either on or off) and have the other guys try to guess what style they are and who knows, I think that you would have many of the guys asking to have these suits made again !!!!!
Just a thought, but I think that this may lead to having more business for you and Koala !!!!!!!

I completely agree with you in what comes to better quality, condescending in terms of speed of manufacturing (and i already have a bigger wait time, since I'm in Europe). Even so, i believe that the time of processing (order, manufacture, sending and receiving) the items is relatively OK, considering that I'm overseas.
As for the other point, which is customer service, i just have to say that, so gar, i had two 'missing' orders, that you have solved perfectly and to my content and the service in all aspects (phone, email) is just great!
For the final though, i must say i will not enter the 100+ club yet, in case you decide to create one, but i believe that if you continue to produce imaginative and exclusive items, I'll get there. Right now i believe I'm between 10 and 20 items, but hey, i just started two years ago...

I applaud you for sticking to your guns and keeping your production where everything you have worked so hard for is paying off. We have had so many businesses in the country defect just for the almighty dollar, and many of them have failed or have had to of been bailed out. They have also lost because designs are easily stolen and copied. Again thank you for your good work...

I applaud the workmanship of your suits - I have a blue bikini bought from you at least 10 years ago (called Brazil I think) which is still good, no stretching of the fabric, and the stitch work is all solid. Don't drop your standards, we can wait a while to get a good Koala suit! I think I've bought about 30 suits from you over a decade...
